A Nightmare on the Gravel

The bright autumn afternoon outside the sprawling Sterling mansion was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, it became a stage for a terrifying betrayal. Lily, six months pregnant and glowing in an emerald green silk dress, sat trembling on the hard gravel driveway beside a massive black SUV. Her breath hitched in her throat as the cold stones pressed into her palms. Above her stood Matthew, her husband of three years, dressed in a sharp, dark blue tailored suit that masked the monster hiding underneath.

In a sudden flash of fury, Matthew lunged forward, his fingers tightening around Lily's dark curls. He yanked her head back, forcing her to look up at his sneering face.

"You're done, Lily! You think you can ruin me? You are nothing without this family!"
he hissed, his voice dripping with venom. Lily gasped, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she tried to protect her baby bump with her free arm.
"Stop, please! Matthew, you're hurting me!"
she screamed, her voice cracking with pure terror.

Matthew's grip tightened, but before he could do more damage, the heavy oak doors of the mansion flew open. Footsteps crunched rapidly against the gravel. Out of the shadows rushed George, Matthew’s father. The older gentleman, distinguished with silver hair and wearing a long black cashmere coat, didn't hesitate. With a roar of pure protective instinct, George slammed into his son, throwing him backward against the SUV.

"Get away from her!"
George roared, his voice shaking the quiet afternoon air.

Without looking back at his stunned son, George dropped to his knees on the gravel, wrapping his arms around the sobbing young woman.

"I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe now,"
he whispered, pulling her close to his chest as she wept. But the nightmare was far from over; a dark secret was about to unravel.
