The Breaking Point

The gravel of the driveway bit into Natalie’s knees, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the terror gripping her chest. Clutching her pregnant belly, she looked up through a blur of tears at the man she had once promised to love forever. Daniel stood over her, his slate grey suit pristine, his face twisted in an ugly mask of rage. Behind him, the black SUV sat idling, a silent witness to his cruelty.

"You're done!" Daniel roared, his hand gripping her hair, pulling her head back brutally. "You think you can just run away from me? You have nothing, Natalie. You are nothing without me!"

Natalie sobbed, her hands shielding her unborn child. "Stop, please!" she screamed, her voice cracking with pure panic. She felt utterly helpless, isolated in the sprawling driveway of their luxury villa where no one could hear her cries. Daniel had spent years cutting her off from her friends and family, ensuring she had nowhere to turn. He believed he was completely invincible.

But before Daniel could drag her back toward the house, a heavy car door slammed in the distance. Footsteps hurried across the gravel. Out of the bright afternoon daylight, a towering figure emerged. It was Edward, an older man with slicked-back grey hair, wearing a dark wool coat that billowed behind him. His eyes burned with an icy, protective fury.

"Get away from her!" Edward bellowed, his voice echoing off the villa's concrete walls.

With a strength that defied his age, Edward rushed forward and forcefully shoved Daniel aside, breaking his grip on Natalie. Daniel stumbled back against the SUV, shocked. Edward immediately dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around Natalie, holding her close to his chest as she wept against his shoulder.
