The Whispers in the Graveyard

The damp autumn leaves clung to the soles of Sarah’s boots, a quiet reminder of the passage of time that she had desperately tried to ignore. For three agonizing years, the cemetery had been her only sanctuary. Beside her, John knelt in the wet grass, his charcoal overcoat draped over his trembling shoulders. They stared at the small, cold tombstone. Inlaid in the granite was an oval porcelain photograph of twin infant boys—Leo and Toby—whose lives had supposedly ended before they even had a chance to begin.

Suddenly, the heavy silence of the graveyard was broken by a soft rustle. A small, frail girl in a faded blue dress stood at the edge of the plot. Her pale blonde hair was tangled, and her eyes held a depth that didn't belong to a child. She stepped closer, pointing a tiny, dirt-smudged finger at the photograph.

"They're not gone," she whispered.

John gasped, his head snapping up as he stared at the young girl. "What did you say?" he asked, his voice cracking with a mixture of fear and sudden, desperate hope.

The girl didn't flinch. She looked directly at Sarah, her voice steady and clear.

"They stay with me," she replied.

Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. The grief that had anchored her for years suddenly felt like a fragile glass dome about to shatter. "Who?" she gasped, clutching the front of her black pea coat.

The girl pointed back at the porcelain oval.

"Both of them."

John scrambled to his feet, stepping toward the child. "Where? Please, sweetheart, where are they?"

The girl began to turn away, looking back toward the iron gates of the cemetery.

"At the orphanage," she murmured.

Tears spilled down Sarah’s cheeks as she looked at John. There was no hesitation in his eyes. He reached down, grabbed her hand, and pleaded with the little girl, "Take us there."
