The air inside the grand cathedral of St. Jude was thick with the scent of burning myrrh and cold stone. Sunlight filtered through the towering stained-glass windows, casting long, fractured shadows across the aisle. Prince Nicholas, dressed in his gilded crimson attire, felt a cold sweat bead on his forehead. This wedding was supposed to seal a fragile peace treaty between two warring realms, but the atmosphere felt more like an execution than a celebration.

Whispers rippled through the congregation as the heavy oak doors groaned open. King Richard, the grey-bearded monarch of the North, marched down the aisle in his royal purple velvet mantle. But it was the figure beside him that made the crowd draw a collective breath of horror. Princess Beatrice, his only daughter, walked with her hands bound in silk, her head completely encased in a heavy, locked wooden barrel. The dark oak was reinforced with rusted iron bands, and a heavy padlock hung near her collarbone.

King Richard stopped at the altar, placing Beatrice's cold hand into Nicholas's trembling grasp. The old king looked forward, his eyes devoid of any fatherly warmth.

"My daughter is now your wife," he declared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

With no celebration, the newlyweds were whisked away to a secluded estate on the cliffs. Once inside their private chamber, Nicholas locked the door behind them. Beatrice stood motionless, the heavy barrel resting cruelly on her shoulders.

"Beatrice, let me help you," Nicholas whispered, his heart pounding. With trembling fingers, he took the key Richard had given him and unlocked the padlock. He reached out to the small metal latch door on the front of the barrel. As he swung it open and peered inside, his breath caught in his throat.

"Oh my God," Nicholas gasped, stumbling backward in absolute horror.

Beatrice’s beautiful face was pale, her eyes wide with terror—but her lips had been brutally sewn shut with thick, golden thread, and pinned inside the wooden lid was a desperate note written in blood.
