The grand gothic cathedral of St. Jude was bathed in the warm, golden glow of late afternoon sun, but the atmosphere inside was ice-cold. Prince Vincent adjusted the collar of his exquisite gold-trimmed white doublet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He had been told this marriage would secure peace between their rival houses, but nothing could have prepared him for the sight at the altar.

Standing beside the elderly King George was Princess Sophia. She wore a stunning white gown, but where her face should have been, there was only a heavy, dark wooden barrel. The barrel was locked tight with thick iron bands and a heavy brass padlock.

King George, looking regal yet menacing in his scarlet robe with white fur trim, held Sophia’s hand. He looked down the aisle at Vincent with a cold, triumphant smile.

"My daughter is now your wife," King George declared.

The words echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, sending a chill down Vincent's spine. The gathered guests sat in stunned, breathless silence. Vincent forced his legs to move, walking nervously down the long stone aisle. Every step felt heavier than the last.

As he reached the altar, the scent of aged oak and metallic oil filled his nostrils. He looked at the wooden barrel. A small metal latch door was built into the front of it. Vincent’s hands shook violently as he reached out.

He unlocked the padlock with the key the king handed him. With a deep breath, he pulled open the small latch door and peered inside the dark, hollow wood.

What he saw made him gasp in absolute horror.

"Oh my God," Vincent whispered, stumbling backward.

Instead of a human face, he was staring into a hollow void of whirring gears and a cold, motionless porcelain mask that seemed fused to the flesh of a weeping girl.
