Why the King Forced a Prince to Marry a Princess in a Locked Wooden Barrel
The Silent Bride
The air inside the grand cathedral of St. Jude was thick with the scent of frankincense and cold, mounting dread. Prince Lawrence stood at the altar, his hands clasped tightly behind his back to hide their trembling. He wore the ornate bronze and teal garments of his house, but they felt like a gilded shroud. His family’s duchy was on the verge of ruin, their lands seized by creditors. This marriage to Princess Rosalind, the daughter of the powerful King Frederick, was their only salvation. Yet, Lawrence had never seen his bride. She had been kept locked away in the high tower for five long years, the subject of dark whispers and terrifying rumors.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the cathedral groaned open. A collective gasp rippled through the gathered nobility. Down the sunlit aisle walked King Frederick, his deep burgundy robes sweeping the stone floor. Beside him was Princess Rosalind. She wore a gown of exquisite white silk, but her head was completely encased in a locked wooden barrel. The heavy oak structure was reinforced with iron bands and secured with a golden padlock resting against her collarbone.
Lawrence’s heart hammered against his ribs. Every step the princess took was slow and agonizing, the weight of the barrel forcing her to sway. King Frederick marched her to the altar with a cold, triumphant smile. He placed her trembling hand into Lawrence’s cold palm.
"My daughter is now your wife," King Frederick declared, his voice booming through the silent cathedral.
The priest, pale and shaking, gestured to the barrel. "The groom must now open the latch to seal the sacred vow." Lawrence reached out, his fingers brushing the cold wood. He found the metal latch on the front door of the barrel and clicked it open. He swung the door aside and peered into the darkness. His breath caught, and he stumbled back in sheer terror.
"Oh my God," Lawrence gasped.
