The Deadly Plunge

The air in the deep jungle was thick, heavy with the scent of decaying vegetation and muddy water. For Clara, a sixty-nine-year-old grandmother wearing her favorite white and purple floral dress, this trip was supposed to be a peaceful family reconciliation. Her son, forty-nine-year-old David, rowed the classic wooden canoe steadily through the muddy waters, his face lined with the exhaustion of trying to keep the peace between his mother and his wife, Brenda.

Brenda sat at the bow, her golden-blonde hair tucked beneath a woven straw visor. To David, she had seemed unusually quiet all morning, her eyes darting toward the shore where the prehistoric shapes of crocodiles occasionally slipped beneath the brown surface. Clara reached out to pat Brenda's shoulder, hoping to offer a gesture of warmth. But the moment Clara’s hand made contact, Brenda’s expression contorted into a mask of pure, manic rage.

"Go down to the river with the crocodiles!" Brenda shrieked, her voice pitch-perfect with hysteria.

With a violent, practiced shove, Brenda slammed her hands into Clara’s chest. The elderly woman gasped, her balance instantly vanishing as she tumbled backward over the low wooden gunwale of the canoe. The water erupted in a massive splash, instantly soaking her floral dress and dragging her downward into the dark, treacherous currents.

"No! What are you doing?" David screamed in absolute horror, his deep voice cracking with panic.

He dropped his oar, watching in terror as his mother surfaced, sputtering and terrified. Only yards away, a massive V-shaped ripple in the water began speeding directly toward Clara. A hungry crocodile had spotted the sudden commotion, and it was closing in fast.
