The rain beat a relentless rhythm against the fogged windows of the Golden Griddle Diner. Inside, the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon offered a cozy sanctuary from the autumn chill. Megan, a young waitress dressed in her signature pink striped uniform, moved gracefully between the turquoise booths, wiping down tables and greeting regulars. It was a typical, quiet afternoon until the door chimed, and an elderly woman stepped inside.

She looked incredibly fragile. Her curly white hair was slightly damp from the rain, and she wore a worn-out coat that seemed a size too large. She slipped quietly into a booth in the corner, her eyes darting nervously around the room. Megan felt an immediate tug of sympathy in her chest. She grabbed a menu and walked over with a warm smile.

"Welcome to the Golden Griddle," Megan said gently. "What can I get started for you today?"

The woman stared at the menu with trembling hands.

"A bowl of clam chowder, please," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the diner's refrigerator.

A few minutes later, Megan returned with a steaming bowl of rich, creamy chowder.

"Here's your meal, enjoy," she said, placing it carefully on the table.

But as the bowl touched the table, the woman’s face fell into deep worry. She looked up at Megan with eyes swimming with tears.

"But I don't have any money," she confessed, her voice shaking.

Megan’s heart melted. She knew the diner's strict policy about non-paying customers, but she couldn't bear to see this sweet woman go hungry. Leaning down, Megan smiled kindly and whispered,

"Don't worry, it's on me."

The woman let out a soft breath of relief. Then, reaching into her sleeve, she pulled out a small, tightly folded note. She placed it in Megan's hand.

"Please take this," she urged.

Taking the paper, Megan looked puzzled.

"What's this?" she asked. But the woman only squeezed her hand, offering a look of profound gratitude.
