The Oakridge Diner was a relic of a bygone era, its dark wood booths worn smooth by decades of weary travelers and local regulars. For Jessica, however, the rustic charm had long since faded. It was a place of endless shifts, aching feet, and the constant, overbearing shadow of her boss, Arthur. Ever since her mother passed away five years ago, Jessica had poured her soul into the diner, believing she was preserving her family's legacy. Arthur, who claimed to be her uncle, constantly reminded her of how generous he was for keeping her employed on the payroll.

On a particularly bleak Tuesday afternoon, as cold rain lashed against the fogged windows, the heavy front door creaked open. An elderly woman with wavy white hair and a faded coat stepped inside. She shivered, her frail frame looking lost in the empty diner. She chose a secluded booth in the corner, her worried eyes scanning the laminated menu with an intensity that spoke of deep, underlying anxiety.

Jessica felt an immediate wave of sympathy. She walked over, offering a warm, genuine smile to the cold traveler. The woman, whose name was Florence, looked up with hollow, tired eyes. Jessica went to the kitchen and returned with a bowl of steaming, rich potato soup, placing it gently on the table.

"Here's your meal, enjoy," Jessica said softly.

Florence stared at the soup, the steam rising to warm her pale face. But instead of picking up her spoon, she looked up, her lips trembling with emotion.

"But I don't have any money," she whispered, her voice cracking with embarrassment.

Knowing Arthur was in the back office and would be furious if he found out, Jessica didn't hesitate. She leaned down, keeping her voice low and kind.

"Don't worry, it's on me," Jessica replied with a reassuring smile.

Tears welled in Florence's eyes. Gratefully, she reached into her worn sleeve and pulled out a small, tightly folded piece of paper, pressing it into Jessica's palm.

"Please take this," Florence urged quietly.

Jessica looked down at the paper, her brow furrowing with confusion.

"What's this?" Jessica asked, but Florence only gave a solemn nod, signaling her to keep it hidden.
