An Act of Kindness in a Cold Diner

The rain beat relentlessly against the fogged windows of the Oakridge Diner, a vintage haven of warm wood and the comforting aroma of fresh coffee. Inside, Jenny adjusted her green uniform and wiped down the counter. It was a slow Tuesday afternoon, the kind of day that made the hours drag. That was when the door chimed, and an elderly woman stepped inside, shivering from the autumn chill.

She wore a faded grey cardigan that offered little protection against the elements. Her silver hair was damp, and her eyes carried a heavy weight of exhaustion. She quietly slipped into a corner booth, looking as though she wished to disappear. Jenny’s heart swelled with sympathy. She knew what it was like to feel cold and forgotten.

Without waiting for an order, Jenny ladled a generous portion of steaming chicken broth into a ceramic bowl. She walked over to the booth and placed the hot meal gently in front of the woman. "Here's your meal, enjoy," Jenny said with a warm, reassuring smile.

The elderly woman looked up, her eyes wide with sudden panic. She stared at the steaming soup, then at Jenny.

"But I don't have any money,"
she whispered, her voice trembling with embarrassment.

Jenny leaned down, her expression softening even more. She placed a comforting hand near the table.

"Don't worry, it's on me,"
she replied softly.

The woman, whose name was Beatrice, let out a shaky breath. Tears of gratitude shimmered in her eyes. Slowly, she reached into the sleeve of her worn cardigan and pulled out a small, tightly folded piece of paper. She pressed it into Jenny's palm.

"Please take this,"
Beatrice whispered.

Jenny looked down at the paper, then back at the mysterious woman.

"What's this?"
she asked, completely puzzled. But Beatrice only offered a faint, sad smile, leaving the question hanging in the warm diner air.
