The Miracle at the Gala

The annual Sterling Gala was supposed to be a celebration of my family’s legacy, but to me, it was a gilded cage. I sat in my wheelchair, draped in a champagne gold gown, watching the elite of the city mingle under the high ceilings of our family's ballroom. For ten years, since the car crash that took my sister Clara's life and left me paralyzed, this was my reality. I was the tragic, silent daughter.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors flew open. A young man, disheveled and gasping for breath, burst into the room. He had a fresh scratch on his cheek, and his clothes were worn, a stark contrast to the tuxedo-clad guests. Before security could react, he sprinted straight toward me and fell to his knees.

He placed his hand on my lap. His touch was warm, sending an odd, tingling sensation through my gown.

"I can help," he whispered intensely.

I stared at him, my heart hammering.

"Who are you?" I asked, confusion and fear swirling inside me.

Instead of answering, he locked his piercing blue eyes onto mine.

"Trust me," he whispered. "One, two, three."

On the count of three, a sudden surge of electric heat rushed down my spine and flooded my legs. It was a sensation I hadn't felt in a decade. I gasped, my muscles tightening involuntarily. Before I could process the impossibility of it, I rose to my feet. I stood fully, balancing on my own legs.

"How?" I whispered, tears welling in my eyes.

The boy smiled softly, a look of profound relief washing over his face.

"My mom said your heart would..."

My eyes drifted down to his neck, where a silver crest pendant hung from a simple cord. My breath caught. It was my sister Clara’s custom pendant.

"Where did you get that?" I demanded, my hands trembling as I touched the silver.

Lucas smiled warmly.

"She said... you're mine."

"She said... you're mine."
