The afternoon sun was barely peeking through the overcast grey sky of downtown Boston when the screaming began. Clara was just holding her six-year-old daughter Lily’s hand, walking back from the bakery, when a shadow fell over them. Before Clara could even register the sudden movement, a woman in a green sundress lunged forward with a face twisted in pure, unadulterated rage. It was Vanessa.

"You took everything from me!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the brick walls of the narrow sidewalk.

Before Clara could reply, Vanessa grabbed her by the hair, pulling her down to the cold concrete. Clara’s instinct was immediate and absolute: she threw her body over Lily, shielding her small, trembling frame as the little girl began to sob hysterically. Clara felt the violent tug on her scalp and then the heavy, repeated blows rain down on her head and shoulders.

Bystanders froze, gasping in shock as the brutal assault unfolded. Clara squeezed her eyes shut, holding Lily tight, praying for a miracle.

"Get off her! No!"

The booming voice shattered the chaos. A muscular man in a grey t-shirt and a baseball cap charged into the frame. Without a second thought, he threw himself between the attacker and the helpless family, forcefully tackling Vanessa to the ground. The impact was loud, sending the aggressive woman sprawling onto the pavement.

The man immediately stood over Clara and Lily, his chest heaving, his posture defensive. "Are you okay?" he breathed, his eyes scanning Clara's bruised face.

Clara looked up through her tears, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn't know this man, but he had just saved their lives. As sirens began to wail in the distance, Vanessa screamed from the ground, pointing a trembling finger at Clara. "She’s a thief! She stole my baby!"

The crowd gasped, but Clara could only look at her savior, whose expression suddenly turned from heroic to deeply, hauntingly pale.
