A Deadly Push in the Jungle

The oppressive heat of the tropical jungle hung heavy over the murky river. Eleanor Vance, seventy-two, sat quietly in the center of the vintage wooden canoe, her patterned green dress damp with sweat. She had trusted her daughter-in-law, Chloe, when the young woman suggested a private river excursion to "heal family bonds." But as the canoe drifted deeper into the wild, undisturbed waters, Eleanor noticed the cold, calculating look in Chloe's eyes. Beside them, Eleanor’s fifty-year-old son, Richard, rowed steadily, unaware of the tension building in the boat.

Suddenly, the peaceful silence of the jungle was shattered. With a manic, high-pitched scream, Chloe lunged forward. "Go down to the river with the crocodiles!" she shrieked, her face contorted in a mask of pure hatred. Before Richard could react, Chloe violently shoved the elderly woman over the side of the canoe.

"No! What are you doing?" Richard screamed, his voice a deep, panicked boom that echoed off the dense canopy.

Eleanor hit the murky water with a massive splash. The cold, dark river enveloped her, and as she gasped for air, she saw the terrifying silhouette of a large crocodile swimming rapidly toward her. The prehistoric predator sensed her panic, its jaws snapping just inches from her splashing limbs. In the boat, Chloe watched with a sickening, triumphant smile, while Richard frantically tried to turn the heavy wooden canoe around.

Eleanor swam with every ounce of strength left in her frail body. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she saw the beast closing the distance. The water churned behind her, a grim reminder that she was seconds away from becoming prey. Just as her strength began to fail, her hand brushed against a thick, low-hanging mangrove root.
