The Smashed Coffin

The air in the parlor of the Vance estate was thick with the scent of lilies and melting wax. A solemn hush had fallen over the gathered mourners, all dressed in pristine black silk and wool. At the center of the room, resting on ornate brass stands, sat a heavy, white wooden coffin. It was supposed to be the final resting place of twenty-four-year-old Emma Vance. But the quiet dignity of the service was shattered in an instant when Mia, the family’s young maid, burst through the heavy double doors clutching a rusted wood-splitting axe.

Trembling violently in her lavender uniform and white canvas apron, Mia raised the heavy weapon. Before anyone could react, she brought it down onto the polished lid of the coffin. The sound of splintering wood echoed like a gunshot through the room. Screams erupted from the crowd as wood chips scattered across the Persian rug.

"Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" Mia screamed desperately, her voice cracking with raw emotion.

Arthur Vance, Emma’s father, lunged forward. His grey beard bristled with rage as he tried to wrestle the axe from the trembling girl's grip. "Have you lost your mind?!" he roared, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson. "Step away from my daughter's casket!"

But Mia held her ground, tearfully pleading with the horrified onlookers.

"I heard her! I heard her crying! I washed her hair this morning, her hands were warm. She is still alive!"

A sudden, chilling silence descended upon the parlor. No one dared to breathe. Then, from the jagged, splintered hole in the coffin lid, a faint, muffled female voice whispered from the darkness within:

"No... don't do this to me..."

Arthur froze, his hand hovering in mid-air as a sudden panic flashed across his eyes. He looked around wildly at the gasping crowd.

"Did you hear that?"
Eleanor, Emma's grandmother, stepped forward, her silver bun catching the dim candlelight. With trembling fingers, she touched the splintered wood and gasped,
"My God... Emma?"
