A Cold Night and a Warm Meal

The winter wind howled down the avenues, but inside David’s cozy bistro, the atmosphere was warm and filled with the rich aroma of roasted herbs and fresh bread. David, a clean-shaven man in his late thirties wearing a sharp navy blazer, stood near the front counter. He was checking the evening’s inventory when his eyes drifted toward the large, glowing glass window. Standing just outside in the freezing cold was a young girl with curly red hair. She wore a knitted sweater that was far too large for her tiny frame, its sleeves swallowing her hands. She was staring at the patrons dining inside, her eyes wide with a mixture of longing and hunger.

David’s heart ached. Without a second thought, he packaged a generous portion of roasted chicken, vegetables, and warm bread into a white takeout box. Stepping out into the biting night air, he approached the girl gently. "Here you go, sweetheart," David said, offering her the box. The little girl looked up, her face lighting up with an incredibly warm smile.

"Thank you, sir,"
she said softly. David smiled back, saying,
"You're welcome."

Instead of eating the food, the girl clutched the box tightly to her chest and ran off into the dark, narrow brick alley beside the restaurant. Concerned for her safety, David followed her. He trailed her through the shadows until she entered a crumbling, dimly lit apartment building. Peering through the cracked door of a cramped room, David watched as the girl knelt beside two younger siblings and a pale, exhausted woman. They were gathered around an empty plastic bowl.

The girl eagerly handed over the box.

"You eat, Mama,"
she urged.
"I already ate at school today."
Standing in the doorway, David felt a sharp pain in his chest. He knew the local school had been closed for weeks. Tears stung his eyes as he whispered to himself, "That's a lie."
