A Whisper in the Mist

The autumn air was thick with a damp, clinging fog that seemed to swallow the sound of my weeping. I knelt on the cold, wet grass of the churchyard, my fingers trembling as I traced the gilded letters carved into the gray granite monument. Leo and Toby. Our beautiful baby boys. Three years had passed since the night the doctor told us they hadn't survived birth, yet the agony of their loss felt as fresh as the fallen maple leaves scattered around our feet.

My husband, John, knelt beside me, his black wool blazer damp from the mist. His hand rested on my shoulder, a silent anchor in our shared sea of grief. We had built this monument as a sanctuary, a place to hold the memories of the children we never got to raise. Every week, we brought fresh flowers, staring at the small, framed photograph of two sleeping infants that we had placed at the base of the stone.

Suddenly, the soft rustle of leaves broke the silence. We turned to see a young blonde girl, no older than six, standing a few feet away. She wore a faded, torn beige dress and stared at us with eyes that seemed far too old for her face.

"They're not gone,"

she said, pointing a small, pale finger directly at the photograph.

John gasped, his body tensing instantly. He looked at the girl in disbelief.

"What did you say?"

he asked, his voice cracking with emotion.

The girl did not flinch. She took a step closer, her gaze remaining steady.

"They stay with me,"

she replied softly.

A cold shiver ran down my spine, and my heart began to hammer against my ribs. I looked at her, my vision blurred by tears.

"Who?"

I whispered, terrified of the hope rising in my chest.

Lily pointed to the photo once more, her voice unwavering.

"Both of them."
"Where?"

John demanded, rising to his feet, his hands shaking. But the girl was already turning away, her gaze shifting toward the edge of the woods.

"At the orphanage,"

she said simply. John looked down at my tearful, hopeful face, his own eyes wide with a desperate resolve.

"Take us there,"

he pleaded.
