My Wife Forced My Daughter to Clean, But My Father's Legacy Saved Her
A Father's Sudden Return
The heavy oak doors of the Sterling mansion always shut with a silent, imposing finality. For eight-year-old Lily, that sound had become a prison knell. Clutching a heavy, rusted industrial mop that was far too large for her small hands, she knelt on the cold, polished marble foyer. Her sandy blonde hair was tangled, and her blue dungarees were covered in grime. Tears traced clean paths down her dusty cheeks.
"Dad, where are you?"she whispered to the empty, echoing hallway, her voice cracking with exhaustion.
Suddenly, the massive front door swung open. David, returning two days early from his business trip in Chicago, stepped into the warmth of the foyer. He wore his dark teal trench coat, and in his right hand, he clutched a plush, oversized teddy bearβa surprise for the daughter he had missed terribly. But the smile froze on his face the moment his eyes landed on the pathetic figure on the floor.
Before he could drop his bags, the click of high heels echoed from the grand staircase. Victoria, his elegant wife, stepped down. She wore a flawless beige pantsuit, her signature black bob perfectly coiffed, and a half-empty glass of expensive red wine balanced delicately in her hand. She stopped, her eyes narrowing as she saw her husband.
"Why are you home early?"she asked, her voice tight with an undercurrent of panic.
David ignored her, rushing to his daughter's side.
"Why is she on the floor?"he demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and rising fury. He looked at the dirty water in the bucket, then at Victoria's cold, indifferent expression.
Before Victoria could answer, Lily reached into her pocket. With trembling fingers, she held up a heavy, tarnished silver bracelet.
"Grandpa gave it to me,"she sobbed, holding it tightly. David's heart stopped. It was his late father's signature bracelet.
"Where did you get that?"David whispered. Victoria instantly stepped forward, her face turning pale.
"She doesn't know what she's saying!"she snapped, trying to snatch the heirloom. But Lily shrank back, crying out,
"He said only you should read it... He said I'm the real heir to this house!"
