The Locked Bride

The air inside the grand cathedral of St. Jude was thick with the scent of burning myrrh and cold stone. Prince Gabriel adjusted his elegant, silver-veined navy blue tunic, his hands trembling slightly. This marriage was supposed to be a political alliance to save his family’s failing estate, but a heavy sense of dread hung over him. He had never met his bride, Princess Victoria. She had been kept in absolute isolation by her father, the powerful and ruthless King William.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors groaned open. The congregation fell into a dead silence. King William, clad in a rich crimson mantle, marched down the aisle. Beside him walked a figure in a stunning white bridal gown, but her head was completely encased in a locked wooden barrel, reinforced with thick iron bands and secured with a heavy brass padlock.

Gabriel’s heart stopped. He looked at the king, then at the bizarre, terrifying sight of his bride. King William reached the altar, placed the girl’s trembling hand in Gabriel’s, and declared in a booming, cold voice:

"My daughter is now your wife."

The priest, pale with fear, rushed through the vows. Gabriel, threatened by the silent presence of William's guards, whispered his assent. The moment the vows were sealed, King William handed Gabriel a small brass key. "Open the latch, Prince Gabriel," the King sneered. "See what you have bound yourself to."

With trembling fingers, Gabriel unlocked the padlock and opened the small metal latch door on the front of the barrel. He peered into the dark, suffocating space. He expected a monster, but instead, he saw Victoria's tear-streaked, beautiful face, gagged with a blood-stained cloth. Pinned to her collar was a desperate note: "Gabriel, run. My father poisoned your family. You are next."

Gabriel gasped in sheer horror, his voice echoing through the silent cathedral,

"Oh my God."

You are next."Gabriel gasped in sheer horror, his voice echoing through the silent cathedral,"Oh my God."
