The Healing Touch

The late afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the gravel driveway of the sprawling estate. Clara stood trembling on her crutches, her simple blue sun dress fluttering in the warm breeze. For three years, her legs had been nothing but dead weight, a constant reminder of the horrific car accident that had shattered her life. Yet, kneeling before her in the dirt was Toby, a young man she had never met, whose messy dark hair and soiled flannel shirt spoke of a life far removed from her family's immense wealth.

With absolute reverence, Toby gently placed her numb feet into a weathered metal tub filled with warm water and crushed herbs. Clara's breath hitched. "I can't feel anything, Toby," she whimpered, tears pooling in her eyes. But Toby didn't look up immediately; he focused on massaging her heels. "I'll help you walk," he murmured softly, his voice carrying an unshakeable conviction.

"Please, just a second," Toby pleaded as footsteps crunched aggressively on the gravel.

Richard, Clara's father, rushed forward in his immaculate grey business suit, his face red with fury. "Hey, stop! Get away from her!" he commanded, his voice echoing across the manicured lawns. He reached out to grab Toby, but Clara gasped. A sudden, electric warmth shot up her calves. It was a sensation she had prayed for every night. Looking at her father, tears of pure joy streamed down her face. "Dad, I felt that," she choked out.

Richard froze, his anger instantly evaporating into sheer, paralyzed shock. He stared at his daughter's feet, then up at Toby, who slowly rose to his feet. From his pocket, the dirty young man pulled a tarnished silver medallion. "My mother said you'd remember this," Toby whispered. Richard’s face turned deathly pale.
