Richard sat in his parked SUV, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. He had pulled over just blocks away from his big client meeting, alerted by a notification on his phone. It was a motion alert from the hidden security camera he had recently installed in his home’s grand, high-ceilinged entryway. He had set it up out of a lingering, uneasy gut feeling—and now, looking at the live feed, his worst fears were realized.

A Cruel Command

On the screen of his phone, his eight-year-old daughter, Lily, was on her knees. Wearing her favorite oversized grey hoodie, her small frame shook with silent, heavy sobs. She was dragging a heavy, dirty mop across the pristine marble floor. Standing over her was Eleanor, Richard’s wife of just one year. Eleanor was casually leaning against the staircase, munching on pretzels from a plastic bag.

"Clean it again," Eleanor ordered, her voice cold and devoid of any warmth.

Lily stopped, her tiny hands squeezing the wooden handle of the mop. Her voice was a fragile whimper that pierced Richard's heart. "My hands hurt, Eleanor. Please."

Eleanor didn't offer a shred of sympathy. Instead, she glared directly toward the hallway, her eyes landing briefly on the hidden camera she didn't know was there. "Then cry quieter," she snapped, tossing another pretzel into her mouth.

Lily’s tears flowed faster, splashing onto the wet marble. "Please, I want my dad! I want my dad!" she begged, looking around the empty, cold house.

A smug, wicked smile spread across Eleanor's face. "He won't see this," she sneered, confident in her complete control.

In his car, Richard felt a wave of pure, unadulterated rage wash over him. "I see everything," he muttered, throwing his phone onto the passenger seat. He slammed his foot on the accelerator, roaring back toward the house. When he arrived, he didn't even turn off the engine. He sprinted up the steps and threw the heavy front door open with a deafening crash, shattering the quiet of the suburban neighborhood.
