The Miraculous Touch

The gravel driveway of the sprawling Harrison estate was bathed in the amber hues of a late autumn sunset. For nineteen-year-old Clara, the beautiful evening was just another reminder of the freedom she had lost. Resting her weight on her crutches, her soft peach dress swaying gently in the evening breeze, she stared down at her lifeless legs. Three years had passed since the car accident that shattered her spine and her dreams. Every specialist her wealthy father, Richard, had hired had delivered the same grim prognosis: she would never feel her feet again.

But that evening, the quiet solitude of the estate was interrupted. A young man, no older than twenty, walked determinedly up the long driveway. He wore a tattered gray shirt and worn-out jeans, looking entirely out of place in this wealthy enclave. In his hands, he carried a simple, round metal tub. Before Clara could cry out, the boy knelt on the rough gravel before her. His dark brown hair fell over his eyes as he gently placed her bare feet into the warm, herb-infused water inside the tub.

"I'll help you walk," he whispered, looking up with fierce sincerity.

Tears welled in Clara's eyes. Before she could process his words, the heavy oak doors of the mansion burst open. Richard, immaculate in his dark gray suit, rushed down the steps, his face contorted with rage. "Hey, stop!" he roared, marching toward the intruder.

"Please, just a second," Toby pleaded, his hands gently massaging her soles.

Clara whimpered, caught between terror and a strange, budding hope. "I can't," she cried. But Toby looked up, his gaze locking onto hers. "You can," he insisted. Richard arrived, grabbing Toby's shoulder. "Get away from her. Inside, now," he commanded. But as Richard pulled him back, Clara gasped. A sudden, sharp warmth surged through her limbs. "Dad, I felt that!" she sobbed. Richard froze in absolute shock. Slowly, Toby reached into his pocket and held up a tarnished silver medallion. "My mother said you'd remember this," Toby said quietly.
