A Sudden Revelation on the Lawn

The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow over the manicured estate lawn, but the heat did nothing to warm the chill that had settled in Robert’s chest. For nearly two years, Robert had lived in a world of creeping shadows and terrifying gray fog. The doctors called it a progressive, untreatable condition, and Robert had accepted his fate. He sat quietly on the stone bench, wearing his dark sunglasses to shield his sensitive eyes from the glare, enjoying the quiet rustle of the leaves.

Beside him stood Maya, the seven-year-old daughter of his estate groundskeeper. Maya was a bright, observant child who often kept Robert company, telling him about the colors of the flowers he could no longer see. But today, Maya’s demeanor was different. She stood directly in front of him, her young face unusually solemn.

Without warning, Maya reached out and gently but firmly pulled the sunglasses off Robert’s face. The sudden burst of light made him blink rapidly, his damaged vision struggling to adjust. Before he could speak, Maya leaned in close.

"You're not blind," she whispered, her voice steady and clear.

Robert froze, his heart hammering against his ribs. The words made no sense, yet they struck a primal chord of panic deep inside him.

"What did you say?" Robert whispered in utter disbelief.

Maya didn't answer him directly. Instead, she raised her small hand and pointed toward the paved walkway in the background. Robert strained his eyes, catching the blurry silhouette of his auburn-haired wife, Claire, who had just stepped outside. Claire had stopped dead in her tracks, her face pale, a soft gasp of horror escaping her lips.

"It's your wife," Maya continued, her innocent voice carrying across the quiet lawn. "She puts it in your food."

Robert’s breathing grew heavy and shallow. His mind raced as a sickening dread began to take hold.

"What are you talking about, Maya?" he asked, his voice trembling.

Maya pointed once more, directly at the teacup resting on the small stone table next to the bench.

"Ask her what she put in your tea," Maya said.
