The Blind Man's Eyes

For two agonizing weeks, I lived in a world of self-imposed darkness. The charcoal suit I wore felt like armor, and the heavy sunglasses obscuring my eyes were my only shield against a devastating truth. I had feigned blindness after a minor car accident, desperate to observe my wife, Katherine, without her guard up. Our marriage had devolved into a chilly silence, and her late-night whispers on the phone suggested a betrayal I was unprepared to face. But nothing could have prepared me for the afternoon the illusion shattered in our sunny garden.

The golden hour bathed the brick paths in warm, amber light. I sat on the teak bench, letting my hands rest heavily on my cane. In the background, Katherine stood in her elegant peach dress, her eyes fixed on me with a cold, calculating detachment. She believed I was helpless. Then, my eight-year-old stepdaughter, Lily, approached. She wore her favorite green dress, her expression unusually solemn for a child.

Without warning, Lily reached out and pulled the sunglasses from my face. I blinked against the sudden glare, my gaze locking onto hers. In my lapse of concentration, I failed to look away.

"You're not blind," Lily said, her voice steady but laced with a terrifying maturity.

My breath hitched. A cold dread washed over me. I whispered in disbelief,

"What did you say?"

Lily didn't flinch. Instead, she pointed directly toward the brick path where Katherine stood frozen. Katherine's face drained of color, her hands flying to her mouth in utter horror.

"It's your wife," Lily continued, her small finger steady. "She puts it in your food."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I breathed heavily, the sunny garden suddenly spinning.

"What are you talking about?" I asked, my voice cracking.

Lily pointed once more, her eyes pleading.

"Ask her what she put in your tea."
