A Sudden Return

The grand foyer of the marble mansion was usually a place of quiet elegance, but tonight it echoed with the cruel laughter of high society. Margaret stood in the center of the room, her magenta silk dress catching the light of the massive crystal chandelier. In her hand, she cradled a martini glass, her eyes glittering with malice as she looked down at her younger sister, Grace.

Grace was on her knees, her light gray linen dress soaking up the dirty water from the floor. She was desperately scrubbing at a dark red stain, her hands trembling. Only moments earlier, Margaret had deliberately tripped her, sending a tray of red wine glasses crashing to the floor. Instead of offering help, Margaret had demanded she clean it up immediately, right in front of the wealthy guests who had gathered for the evening gala.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany front doors swung open, letting in a draft of cool night air. Charles, a tall man in a dark pinstripe suit, stepped into the hall. He carried a sleek black leather briefcase, his expression weary from a long flight. But the moment his eyes fell upon the scene in the foyer, he froze in sheer shock.

Margaret, noticing her husband's arrival, did not flinch. Instead, a smug smile spread across her lips. She took a slow sip of her martini and stepped forward, gesturing dismissively toward the floor.

"She's just doing what she's good at, cleaning,"
she said, her voice dripping with condescension.

A terrifying silence fell over the room. Charles’s face contorted with a mixture of disbelief and burning fury. Without a word, he dropped his briefcase, pulled his phone from his jacket pocket, and pressed it to his ear.

"Cancel everything. Now!"
he demanded, his voice echoing like thunder. Margaret’s smile vanished, replaced by sudden panic.
"What?"
she stammered. Charles looked at her with eyes like ice.
"This house is no longer yours,"
he said coldly, lowering his phone as Grace looked up with tear-filled eyes.
