The bright, cheerful colors of the Sunshine Academy preschool hallway had always brought a sense of comfort to Claire. Painted rainbow murals lined the walls, and the sound of children laughing usually filled the air. But today, the only sound echoing through the corridor was a gut-wrenching, desperate scream. Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs as she ran toward the noise, her heels clicking frantically against the polished floor.

At the end of the hallway, near the white safety gate that separated the lobby from the classrooms, her six-year-old son, Toby, was on his knees. Clad in his favorite red hoodie, his small body shook with violent, uncontrollable sobs. He was clutching the cold metal bars of the gate, pointing frantically toward the darkened hallway beyond. Tied to the gate's handle was a small, frayed pink ribbon—the exact ribbon Claire had tied into her four-year-old daughter Lily’s hair that very morning.

"My sister is inside!"

Toby screamed, his voice cracking with pure terror.

"She can't open it!"

Claire lunged forward, but her path was suddenly blocked by Megan, one of the senior daycare workers. Megan, dressed in a dark green blouse, offered a tight, artificial smile. She glanced nervously at the other parents who were beginning to gather in the lobby, whispering among themselves.

"He's just making a scene, Claire,"

Megan said, her voice dripping with forced calmness.

"Children get so dramatic at pick-up time."

Claire ignored her, kneeling beside her sobbing son. Toby’s face was red and streaked with tears as he reached his small hands through the white bars. Claire looked up at Megan, her voice trembling.

"Where is my daughter, Megan? Where is Lily?"

Megan shifted her weight, her uneasy gaze darting away.

"She went home,"

Megan replied smoothly.

"She was picked up twenty minutes ago."

Toby shrieked, his voice filled with absolute conviction.

"No, she didn't! She's still in there!"
