A Mother's Worst Nightmare

The afternoon sun filtered warmly through the windows of the Sunshine Academy, casting long shadows across the forest-themed murals on the walls. It should have been a peaceful end to a long workday for Vanessa. But as she stepped into the preschool lobby, the air was shattered by a sound that made her blood run cold. It was the frantic, breathless screaming of her five-year-old son, Carter.

Vanessa rushed down the hallway, her heart hammering against her ribs. There, kneeling by the white safety gate that separated the lobby from the rear classrooms, was Carter. He was clutching the bars, his grey hoodie damp with sweat and tears. Tied tightly to the latch of the gate was a small pink satin ribbon—a ribbon Vanessa recognized instantly. It belonged to her three-year-old daughter, Lily.

“My sister is inside!” Carter shrieked, his voice cracking with sheer terror. “She's inside!”

Rebecca, the head daycare administrator, stepped out from a nearby office. She wore a dark teal shirt and a tight, nervous smile that didn't reach her eyes. She looked at the other parents who were beginning to stare, then turned to Vanessa with a dismissive wave of her hand.

“He's making a scene, Vanessa,” Rebecca whispered, her voice forced and airy. “He's just having a tantrum because it's time to go.”

But Carter’s agony was too real to be ignored. He wailed, his face red and streaked with tears as he pointed into the dark corridor behind the gate.

“She can't open it! Mommy, she can't get out!” he sobbed.

Vanessa felt a cold wave of panic wash over her. She gripped Rebecca’s arm, her eyes wide with desperation.

“Where is my daughter, Rebecca?” Vanessa demanded, her voice trembling. “Where is Lily?”

Rebecca’s smile faltered, her gaze shifting uneasily toward the security desk. She cleared her throat before delivering a line that would shatter Vanessa's world.

“She went home,” Rebecca said coldly. “An authorized guardian picked her up twenty minutes ago.”

But Carter screamed louder, his tiny hands reaching through the bars. “No, she didn't! She didn't leave!”

“No, she didn't! She didn't leave!”
