My Daughter Begged Me to Leave the Carnival, Then She Opened Her Backpack

A Strange Request at the Carnival

The sunset over the county fairgrounds painted the sky in deep shades of orange and purple, but the vibrant colors did nothing to ease the sudden dread pooling in Michael’s chest. Just hours ago, he and his nine-year-old daughter, Emma, had been laughing on the carousel, sharing a giant stick of pink cotton candy. It was their first real outing since the passing of Emma's mother, and Michael had desperately wanted it to be perfect. But everything changed when Emma returned from the restroom area near the edge of the woods, her face pale and her breathing shallow.

She had dragged him by the hand all the way to their black minivan parked at the edge of the gravel lot. Now, she sat huddled inside the open sliding door, tears streaming down her dirt-smudged cheeks.

"Dad, can we just go home please?" Emma begged, her voice cracking with a raw panic that Michael had never heard from her before.

Michael leaned in close, his brow furrowed with deep concern. He reached out to gently brush a stray lock of brown hair from her forehead. "What's wrong, baby?" he asked softly, trying to keep his own rising panic out of his voice.

Emma didn't answer right away. Instead, she stepped out of the minivan, looking around the darkening parking lot as if she expected someone to jump out from the shadows. She looked up at him pleadingly, her small hands clutching the straps of her oversized pink backpack.

"Dad, I need to show you something, but please don't get mad," she whispered.

Before Michael could reply, Emma slowly pulled the zipper of her backpack down. Michael braced himself, expecting to see a stray puppy or perhaps some cheap toys she had accidentally walked off with. Instead, his breath caught in his throat. Peering out from the dark interior of the bag was a pair of wide, terrified blue eyes. It was a little girl, no older than three, clutching a worn teddy bear.
