The Calm Before the Storm

The air inside the Highway 61 Diner always smelled of burnt coffee, griddle grease, and old rain. For seventy-six-year-old Frank, it was a sanctuary of routine. Sitting in his favorite dark green vinyl booth, wearing a neatly pressed light blue oxford shirt, he looked like any other grandfather enjoying a quiet afternoon. Beside him rested his polished wooden cane, a vital companion for his worn-out knees. But the peaceful atmosphere was shattered when the diner’s heavy front door swung open, letting in a draft of cold air and the obnoxious roar of laughter.

A group of young bikers swaggered inside, their heavy leather vests bearing the insignia of the local road club. At the head of the pack was Colt, a muscular, bearded man who wore his arrogance like a badge of honor. As Colt passed Frank’s table, his eyes locked onto the elderly man. A cruel smirk spread across his face. Without warning, Colt reached down and snatched Frank's wooden cane, lifting it like a trophy.

"Hey old man, looks like you won't be needing this anymore," Colt mocked, his voice echoing off the tiled walls.

Frank remained completely serene, his silver hair catching the dim light. He didn't flinch. He didn't plead. He simply stared at Colt with a calm, unblinking intensity. Angered by the old man's lack of fear, Colt took a step back, deliberately sweeping his elbow across the table. A tall glass of water tipped over, splashing cold liquid all over Frank’s lap and the morning paper. Colt’s friends burst into raucous laughter as the young biker turned and walked out, carrying the stolen cane with him.

Frank sat in the silence that followed, completely unmoved. Slowly, he reached into his trousers and retrieved an old, scratched flip phone. He flipped it open, dialed a number from memory, and held it to his ear. When the line connected, he didn't raise his voice.

"It's me," Frank whispered. He paused, his gaze fixed on the wet table. "Bring 'em."
