An Unexpected Customer

The morning light poured through the tall, arched windows of Oakridge Community Bank, casting a warm glow over the polished grey granite counters. For Emily, it had been an entirely ordinary Tuesday. She had spent the last hour processing routine deposits and smiling politely at the familiar faces of local business owners. But the quiet rhythm of her workday was shattered when the heavy glass doors swung open, and a tiny figure stepped inside.

He was a young boy, no older than nine, wearing a neatly pressed striped polo shirt and sneakers. What caught Emily’s attention, however, was the massive, dark blue duffel bag he was dragging behind him. It looked incredibly heavy, the fabric strained to its absolute limit. Emily watched in fascination as the boy bypassed the queue and walked straight toward her teller station, his face set with intense determination.

"Hello sweetheart, are you here with an adult?" Emily asked, leaning forward with a warm, comforting smile.

The boy stopped, taking a deep breath as he hoisted the heavy bag onto the high counter. He wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead and looked directly into Emily's eyes.

"No ma'am, I came alone," he replied, his voice surprisingly steady. "I want to open a savings account."

Emily smiled, expecting a sweet moment of a child depositing his piggy bank savings. "Of course, we can do that. Let's see what you have."

But as the boy unzipped the bag, Emily’s smile froze. Inside, packed tightly from corner to corner, were neat, professionally banded stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills. There was easily hundreds of thousands of dollars staring back at her. Emily felt the color drain from her face, her eyes widening in absolute shock as she gasped under her breath.

"Oh my god," Emily whispered, her voice trembling. "Where did this money come from?"
