The morning had started like any other Tuesday at the downtown branch. I was busy adjusting the collar of my forest green blazer, preparing for the mid-morning rush, when the heavy glass doors swung open. A small, solitary figure stepped inside, instantly looking out of place amidst the towering marble pillars and polished brass counters. It was a young boy, around nine years old, wearing a simple charcoal grey t-shirt and worn sneakers. In his small hands, he dragged a heavy, dark green canvas sports bag that seemed to weigh almost as much as he did.

An Unexpected Customer

He walked directly to my teller station, his expression remarkably serious for someone so young. I leaned over the white marble counter, offering him a warm, reassuring smile to ease whatever anxiety he might be feeling.

"Hello sweetheart, are you here with an adult?" I asked gently.

The boy looked up at me, his blue eyes steady and clear. He hoisted the heavy canvas bag onto the counter with a quiet grunt of effort, unzipped it halfway, and looked back at me.

"No ma'am, I came alone. I want to open a savings account," he replied.

Curious, I leaned closer to look inside the bag, expecting to find a collection of silver coins, crumpled allowance bills, or perhaps a childhood piggy bank. Instead, my breath caught sharply in my throat, and the warm smile froze on my face. My eyes widened in absolute shock as the interior of the bag revealed neat, thick, professionally banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills. There was a fortune resting on the counter—easily over a hundred thousand dollars.

"Oh my god," I gasped, my voice barely a whisper as I looked from the money back to his small, innocent face. "Where did this money come from?"
