The grand, teak-paneled hallway of the Sterling estate was usually a place of quiet elegance, but today, the silence was shattered by a sudden, terrifying gasp. The antique brass chandeliers overhead cast a warm, flickering light onto the deep red oriental runner, where Helena, the family's twenty-five-year-old nanny, suddenly stumbled. Clutching her chest, her face turned a ghostly pale. Before anyone could react, her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the plush carpet.

"Helena!" Richard cried, dropping his briefcase. The thirty-nine-year-old father, dressed in a sharp dark slate suit, sprinted down the hallway. Beside him was his eight-year-old son, Leo, who immediately burst into tears at the sight of the woman who had become their anchor.

Leo knelt beside her, his small body shaking with heavy sobs.

"Dad, help her! She's the only one who cares about us!"
he cried out, his voice echoing in the vast, empty hallway.

Richard knelt on the oriental runner, gently cradling Helena's head in his lap. He brushed a stray lock of strawberry blonde hair from her forehead, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Breathe, Helena. Stay with me,"
he whispered desperately, checking her pulse.

As he adjusted her head, the impact of her fall caused the delicate gold chain around her neck to snap. A heavy gold locket clattered onto the hardwood floor. Leo, crying silently, reached out and picked up the polished metal piece. Curiosity overcoming his fear, he pressed the tiny latch. The locket clicked open. Inside was a small, faded photograph.

Leo stared at it, his tears freezing in his eyes. He looked up at his father, his face a mask of utter bewilderment.

"Dad... Dad, why does Helena have your picture?"
he asked, his voice barely a whisper. Richard froze, looking down at the open locket in his son's hand. Inside was indeed his own face, a portrait taken a decade ago—a picture he had only ever given to one person in his entire life: his deceased wife, Clara.
