A Wealthy Stranger Bought out a Bakery to Save Two Starving Orphans
A Cold Refusal in the Warm Bakery
The delicious scent of freshly baked sourdough and sweet cinnamon rolls drifted onto the cold, damp streets, acting as a cruel mockery to nine-year-old Toby and his toddler sister, Lily. For two days, they had survived on nothing but water and sheer hope. Toby’s fingers were numb, but his grip on Lily’s tiny, trembling hand remained fiercely protective. Their mother was gone, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a handful of useless coins.
Summoning every ounce of his courage, Toby pushed open the heavy wooden door of the rustic bakery. Inside, the warmth was intoxicating. Rows of golden loaves lined the shelves. Behind the counter stood Sarah, a young clerk in a navy apron, who immediately eyed the children's disheveled appearance with deep disdain.
"I'm hungry, Toby," Lily whimpered, her lower lip trembling as she clutched her brother's worn jacket.
Toby stepped up to the counter, holding out fifty cents in crumpled coins. "Do you have any bread from yesterday that you sell for less?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Sarah barely glanced at the money. "We don't sell leftovers here," she replied coldly, her tone dripping with indifference. "And we don't allow loitering. Move along."
Lily began to sob, the harsh rejection crushing her fragile spirit. Toby pulled her into a tight hug, his own heart breaking. He felt utterly powerless. But before he could turn to leave, a scrape of a chair echoed from the corner of the shop.
Richard, a distinguished silver-haired businessman in a sharp charcoal suit, stood up from his table. He walked purposefully to the counter, his eyes fixed on the trembling children. He looked at Sarah and demanded, "Pack everything."
Sarah blinked in confusion. "Sir?" she stammered.
"Everything," Richard repeated, his voice commanding and absolute. He then knelt down to the children's level, gently placing a hand on Toby’s shoulder. "Come with me," he said softly. Toby looked at him warily, asking, "Why?" as tears welled up in the older man’s eyes.
