The dust of the country road clung to Alice’s eyelashes, a constant reminder of the home they had left behind. She sat on the hard ground, her faded apron stained with soot and sweat, staring at the meager fire crackling between three flat stones. Around her sat her brother Thomas, her sister Sarah, and young Toby, their faces hollowed by days of hunger. Between them lay a single crust of stale bread, the absolute end of their provisions. Yet, Alice divided it with meticulous care, ensuring everyone got a share, even if it meant her own stomach remained empty.

Suddenly, the quiet country air was shattered by the low rumble of powerful engines. A thick cloud of dust rolled down the horizon, obscuring the setting sun. Two pristine, vintage black cars pulled up beside their makeshift camp, their polished chrome gleaming mockingly against the barren landscape. Three men stepped out of the vehicles. They wore immaculate, tailored suits that spoke of wealth and power—a stark contrast to the desolate surroundings.

Alice instinctively knelt on the ground, shielding young Toby behind her. She held a dented metal plate in her trembling hands, her heart hammering against her ribs. She feared they were lawmen sent to drive them off the public road. Looking up at the lead man, she tried to swallow her fear.

An Unexpected Return

"Can I help you?" Alice asked, her voice barely a whisper against the wind.

The lead man, whose sharp jawline and piercing eyes seemed strangely familiar, stepped forward. He looked down at her, not with the cold disdain she had grown to expect from wealthy men, but with a profound, warm respect. He offered her a hand to help her rise from the dirt.

"You already did," William said softly, his voice carrying an emotional weight that startled her. "You fed us with your last meal."

As the words hung in the warm, dusty air, Alice realized who he was. Only two days prior, three bedraggled, starving travelers had begged for scraps at their camp. Alice had given them the last of their dried meat. Now, those same men stood before them, transformed into figures of immense power.
