A Ghost from the Past

The rhythmic scrubbing of fabric against the washboard was the only sound that broke the afternoon silence on the weathered homestead. Sarah wiped a stray lock of hair from her forehead, her hands soaked in soapy water. Life on the rural farm was hard, but it was safe. For six years, she had built a wall between herself and the painful memories of her past life in the city. Here, surrounded by towering pines and rustic timber, she was just a mother doing her best to survive.

A sudden crunch of gravel shattered her peace. Sarah froze, her heart hammering against her ribs as a sleek black sedan pulled up the dirt path. It was a vehicle that belonged in the high-rise districts of Chicago, not on a dusty farm. The door opened, and a man stepped out. He wore a tailored charcoal grey suit that contrasted sharply with the rustic landscape. It was Ethan.

"It's you," Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible.

Ethan stared at her, his eyes tracing the faded denim overalls and the tired lines around her eyes. For a long moment, neither of them moved. The silence between them was heavy with six years of unsaid words, broken promises, and lingering grief.

"I finally found you," Ethan said, his voice trembling with a mixture of anger and relief.

Before Sarah could find her voice, the creak of the cabin door interrupted them. A young boy with wild, dark curls and bright green eyes bounded down the steps, clutching a wooden tractor.

"Mom! Mom! Look what I built!" Leo called out.

Sarah’s breath hitched. She instinctively pulled the boy close, shielding him with her body. Ethan’s gaze shifted to the child, and the anger on his face instantly melted into pure, unadulterated shock.

"Mom..." Ethan whispered, his eyes darting between the boy's face and Sarah's tearful eyes. "Is he my son?"
