A Cold Farewell in the Rain

The autumn rain fell in relentless, icy sheets, washing over the black iron gates of the estate. David stood in the driveway, his brown leather coat soaked through, his heart heavy with a crushing sense of guilt. Before him stood his elderly mother, Mrs. Rose. Her wavy gray hair clung damply to her face, and her eyes were red-rimmed with unshed tears. With trembling hands, David lifted a heavy burlap sack and pressed it into her frail arms.

"Take the rice and go, mom,"

he said, his voice cracking under the weight of his forced betrayal. He couldn't look her in the eye. He knew that up in the master bedroom, his wife Sarah was watching from behind the curtain, ensuring he carried out her cruel ultimatum.

Mrs. Rose clutched the rough burlap to her chest, her voice shaking but filled with a mother's eternal grace.

"He's just struggling,"

she whispered, trying to find excuses for her son's apparent coldness, refusing to believe that the boy she raised had truly turned against her. With a slow, painful turn, she walked away into the storm, her boots splashing in the mud.

A mile down the road, Mrs. Rose entered her small, rustic wooden cabin. She closed the heavy wooden door against the howling wind and placed the heavy sack onto her worn dining table. Unfastening the coarse twine, she reached inside, expecting only dry grains. Instead, her fingers brushed against a thick, smooth paper envelope.

With trembling hands, she pulled it out. Written on the front in David's familiar handwriting was her name: Mrs. Rose. Inside was five thousand dollars in crisp bills, alongside a hastily scribbled note: "I'm sorry mom, I couldn't say it in front of her." Clasping the envelope to her chest, Mrs. Rose wept, realizing her son had not abandoned her after all.
