The winter wind howled through the iron gates of the Harrison estate, carrying a flurry of biting snow that danced under the warm glow of the courtyard lanterns. Inside, the annual winter gala was winding down, and the city’s wealthiest citizens were beginning to filter out. They laughed and chatted, wrapped in expensive furs and wool coats, carrying beautifully wrapped gifts. Among them was Sarah, an elegant thirty-one-year-old woman clad in a striking silver-grey fur coat. She stood near the grand entrance, bidding farewell to the departing guests, her smile polite but weary.

As the crowd thinned, Sarah’s eyes were drawn to a small, motionless figure standing near the edge of the snowy courtyard. It was a young girl, no older than seven, wearing a tattered brown coat that offered little protection against the freezing night. Her cheeks were flushed red, and frozen tear tracks glistened on her pale face. In her trembling, gloveless hands, she clutched a small, faded wooden box.

While other guests walked past the child, ignoring her as if she were nothing more than a shadow in the snow, Sarah felt a sharp pull in her chest. She stepped away from her husband’s side and walked out into the cold, her boots crunching softly on the fresh snow. As she approached, the little girl looked up, her large green eyes filled with a desperate, heavy sorrow.

"Please," the girl whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. "It is the only thing I have."

With trembling hands, she held the wooden box out to Sarah. Intrigued and deeply moved, Sarah reached out and took the box. It was worn, with a wildflower clumsily carved into the lid. But before Sarah could open it, a sharp gasp cut through the freezing air. Behind her, standing near the heavy iron gates, was Margaret, the formidable matriarch of the Harrison family. Clad in a luxurious beige wool coat, Margaret’s face had turned completely pale, her eyes wide with sheer shock as she stared at the wooden box.
