The sunlight streamed through the high stained-glass windows of the St. Jude Cathedral, casting vibrant pools of amber and sapphire across the polished stone floor. Daniel adjusted the cuffs of his dark gray tuxedo, his heart hammering against his ribs. Standing opposite him was Sarah, radiant in her silk gown, her eyes shining with tears of joy. Everything was picture-perfect—the culmination of a two-year romance that was supposed to bind two of the city's most prominent families together. The priest cleared his throat, preparing to deliver the final vows.

An Uninvited Guest

Suddenly, the massive oak doors at the back of the cathedral creaked open, shattering the sacred silence. A collective gasp rippled through the rows of well-dressed guests. Running down the long white aisle was a child. He was barefoot, his feet caked in dried mud, and his frayed denim shirt was splattered with wet clay. He couldn't have been more than seven years old. He ran with a desperate, wild urgency, ignoring the hushed murmurs and the outraged glares of the wedding party.

Daniel stared in utter confusion as the boy stopped right at the altar, panting heavily.

"What is this?"
Daniel asked, his voice echoing under the high vault. The boy looked up, his gray eyes piercingly familiar.
"I need to show you something,"
the boy said, his voice trembling. He opened his small, dirty palm to reveal a tarnished silver bracelet. Engraved on the metal plate were the words: For my son - Daniel.

A cold dread washed over Daniel.

"No..."
he whispered, his vision blurring. The boy squeezed the metal tightly.
"My mom kept it for me."
Daniel ignored the gasps of his bride and knelt on the cold stone, ruinous to his pristine tuxedo.
"Where did you get that?"
he demanded, his voice cracking.
"She gave it to me before she died,"
the boy replied. Daniel’s breath hitched.
"What was your mother’s name?"
"Clara,"
the boy whispered.
"She said you left us the day I was born."
