The polished granite of the Vance & Sterling private banking lobby shone like a dark mirror under the recessed LED lights. It was a space designed to intimidate the ordinary and comfort the ultra-wealthy. Richard stood near the secure elevator bank, adjusting his charcoal grey suit jacket. He was a rising star in the firm, a man who prided himself on his sharp eye for high-net-worth clients. To Richard, a person’s worth could be measured instantly by the cut of their shoes or the brand of their watch.

Then, she walked in.

She was an elderly woman, moving with a slight, deliberate pace that didn't match the frantic energy of the financial district. She wore a beige trench coat that had seen better days and a simple knitted hat pulled low over her ears. She looked entirely out of place amidst the soaring glass panels and security gates. Richard’s eyes narrowed. He immediately stepped forward to intercept her before she could ruin the aesthetic of his pristine lobby.

An Unwelcomed Visitor

"You lost, ma'am?"
Richard asked, his voice dripping with condescension. He didn't offer a polite smile.
"This wing is for private clients, people with accounts. The retail branch is down the street. We don't have change for the bus here."

The woman stopped. She looked up at him with clear, calm blue eyes. She didn't seem offended by his harsh words; instead, she looked almost amused. Without saying a word, she stepped past him, heading straight toward the private elevator bank reserved exclusively for the board of directors.

"Wait, what is that?"
Richard panicked as she pulled a small, black-and-gold device from her pocket and scanned it against the purple-glowing security panel. The system immediately chimed, and a red alert flashed on the main security desk laptop. She turned to him, her expression serene.
"You should have let me in,"
she said softly.
