The Solemn Oak Courtroom

The heavy double doors of the county courthouse shut with a dull, echoing thud, sealing twenty-year-old Liam and his eighteen-year-old brother, Tyler, inside a room that felt more like a tomb than a hall of justice. Liam wore a faded navy blue sweatshirt, the fabric worn thin at the elbows. It was the only thing he had that felt comfortable, a stark contrast to the stiff, expensive suits worn by his Uncle Richard and the high-priced legal team sitting across the aisle. Beside him, Tyler sat with his head bowed, his blond hair falling over his face as he tried to hide his trembling hands.

For six months, since the tragic car accident that claimed their parents' lives, the brothers had clung to one another. Now, their fragile world was on the line. Uncle Richard was petitioning for full guardianship of Tyler, claiming Liam was too young and financially unstable to raise his brother. In reality, Liam knew Richard only wanted control of Tyler's substantial inheritance trust.

When the bailiff called Liam to the stand, his legs felt like lead. He walked up, but before he spoke, he turned to Tyler, who had broken down in silent tears. Liam pulled his younger brother into a fierce, desperate hug, burying his face in Tyler's shoulder. The courtroom was silent save for their soft sobs.

Liam turned to face Judge Thomas, a stern sixty-two-year-old man whose black robes seemed to absorb the dim light of the courtroom. Liam’s voice trembled, but his resolve was unbreakable.

"I don't have parents, but I can still take care of him," Liam sobbed, his eyes locked onto the judge. "He is my brother. He is all I have left."

In the gallery, Clara, their lifelong neighbor, pressed a hand over her mouth, tears streaming down her face. Judge Thomas looked down solemnly. For a long, agonizing moment, no one moved. Then, a single tear rolled down the judge's weathered cheek, betraying the stern facade of the court.
