The autumn rain fell in relentless, icy sheets, reflecting the neon glow of the upscale city storefronts. Valerie pulled her beige wool overcoat tighter around her shoulders as she stepped out onto the glistening pavement. It had been a long, exhausting day of corporate meetings, and all she wanted was the quiet sanctuary of her home. She unlocked her black luxury sedan, the headlights cutting through the dark, and opened the door.

An Unexpected Confrontation

Before she could even slide into the driver's seat, a sudden splash shattered the quiet hum of the evening. A young man, completely drenched and shivering in a dirty blue shirt, had flung a bucket of street water directly onto her pristine car. Valerie gasped, stepping back in absolute shock. The audacity of the act left her speechless for a brief second before anger took over.

"Are you out of your mind?!"

she yelled, her voice cutting through the sound of the downpour. She glared at the intruder, expecting a fleeing vandal. Instead, she met eyes that were wide, wild, and heavy with unshed tears. The young man stood his ground, his chest heaving as water dripped from his messy hair.

"My mother waited for you,"

he cried, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing pain that stopped Valerie dead in her tracks. Tears began to stream down his pale face, mixing with the cold rain.

"But you never came back. She told me you abandoned me."

Valerie stared at him, her anger instantly evaporating, replaced by a cold dread. "What are you talking about?" she whispered. The boy reached into his pocket with trembling fingers and pulled out a small, damp photograph. He held it up to her face, his grip so tight his knuckles turned white. In the faded image, a much younger Valerie was smiling warmly, cradling a newborn baby in her arms. Valerie's breath caught in her throat. She had never had a child—so who was this boy, and why did he have a photo that shouldn't exist?
