The freezing wind of Blackwood Valley howled through the towering, snow-covered evergreens, but the chill in Lieutenant Clara Vance’s heart was far colder than the winter air. Tied tightly to the trunk of a massive spruce tree, her olive-drab military dress uniform offered little protection against the biting cold. Her peaked cap sat askew on her dark-blonde hair. Standing just inches away was Sheriff Thomas Brody, the man she had once promised to love forever, flanked by two of his laughing deputies.

The Coldest Homecoming

Thomas looked at her with a mixture of mockery and twisted nostalgia. It was hard to believe this was the same boy who had wept when she shipped out to officer candidate school six years ago. Now, wearing a dusty-green sheriff uniform and a cruel smile, he tapped her silver lieutenant bars.

"You a general?" Thomas mocked, his voice echoing through the silent forest.

The deputies burst into loud, mocking laughter. Clara stared at him, a tear spilling over her lashes, yet a bizarre, hysterical laugh escaped her lips. The absurdity of her situation was overwhelming. She had survived deployments in hostile territory, only to be captured by her high school sweetheart in her own hometown.

Seeing her emotional reaction, Thomas stepped closer. With a strange, playful familiarity, he gently covered her mouth with his gloved hand, whispering for her to be quiet. Then, he moved his hand up to cover her eyes, just like they used to play when they were teenagers in these very woods.

"Just like old times, Clary," he murmured, his voice deceptively soft. "But you shouldn't have come back looking for your father's files."

Clara smiled through her tears, letting him believe he held all the power. But beneath her trembling exterior, her mind was razor-sharp, counting the seconds.
