My Husband Smiled When I Locked the Door—Then I Found His Darkest Secret
The Shadow in the Hallway
The old Victorian house had always been filled with creaks and groans, but tonight, the silence was far more terrifying. Clara stood frozen in the narrow, dimly lit hallway, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The overhead lights cast long, cool shadows over the worn wooden floorboards, painting the space in tones of isolation. A few feet away stood Julian, her husband of three years—or at least, the man who wore his face.
His hand was clenched tightly around a heavy metal ring of keys, his knuckles stark white against his dark, heavy-duty jacket. There was an unsettling tension in his posture, a predatory stillness that made Clara’s survival instincts scream. When he took a slow step forward, she bolted. She slammed the heavy wooden door of the study, throwing the deadbolt just as his weight pressed against the other side.
"Why is the door locked from the inside?"
Julian’s voice drifted through the thick wood, eerily calm, carrying a faint, mocking smile. Clara pressed her back against the wall, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the locked handle. She could feel the vibration of his presence on the other side.
"Because you always run when things get serious," she whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely articulate the words.
A chilling silence followed, and then, his voice echoed her words back to her, but with an unnatural, widening grin painted into his tone.
"Because you always run when things get serious."
Tears spilled over Clara’s cheeks. The repetition was hollow, mechanical, devoid of any genuine human emotion. It was the mimicry of a man who had forgotten how to feel.
"No," Clara cried out, her voice cracking in the dim room. "I run when you stop sounding human."
On the other side of the door, the scratching sound of metal against metal began. He was picking the lock.
