The Gilded Cage

The apartment was always quiet, but it was the heavy, suffocating kind of silence. Clara stood in front of the bathroom mirror, the bright overhead lights reflecting the deep, exhausted lines around her eyes. Her pale red hair was tangled, a physical representation of how frayed her nerves had become over the last three years. She raised the brush, her hand trembling slightly as she tried to smooth out the knots. Mark had always insisted she keep her hair long. "It suits you," he would say, though it felt more like a command than a compliment.

Suddenly, the bathroom door creaked open. Mark stepped inside, his dark hair perfectly styled, his white button-up shirt crisp and immaculate. He didn't look tired. He never did. He moved with a slow, predatory grace that used to comfort Clara but now only filled her with dread. He stepped up behind her, his reflection looming over hers in the glass. Without a word, he reached out and wrapped his hand around the handle of the brush, his fingers brushing against hers.

Mark smiled, a cold, tight expression that didn't reach his eyes.

"Let go,"
he said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper.

Clara pulled back, her heart hammering against her ribs. She gripped the brush tighter, her voice trembling but desperate.

"I'm helping,"
she whispered, trying to maintain some shred of control over her own body.

But Mark didn't budge. He held the brush close to her head, his grip unyielding. Clara looked at him through the mirror, her eyes filling with tears of frustration and fear. The sheer weight of his constant monitoring, his endless rules, and his suffocating presence crushed down on her. She turned her head slightly, meeting his cold stare directly.

"You treat me like a thing you own,"
she said, the words slipping out before she could stop them. Mark only looked down at her, his tight, unsettling smile widening just a fraction in the cool, blue-toned light.
