The golden hour sun painted the manicured lawns of the Sterling estate in warm, amber hues. It was supposed to be a day of high-society celebration—Julian Sterling’s second wedding. But for Clara, it was the final destination of a five-year nightmare. Dressed in a modest dark purple dress and a matching pillbox hat, she stood near the edge of the rose garden, her fingers tightly clutching the small, warm hand of her seven-year-old son, Leo.

Leo let go of his mother’s hand, his eyes wide with terror. He fell to his knees, throwing his small arms around Clara’s limp shoulders.

The boy sobbed, his voice echoing through the manicured garden as the golden sunlight faded into darkness.
