A Sudden Burst of Freedom

The heavy oak doors of St. Jude’s Parish banged shut behind Jessica, sealing inside the echoing cries of a shattered wedding. In her elegant teal maid-of-honor gown, Jessica walked briskly down the paved stone walkway, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had just done the unthinkable. Right before the priest could ask if anyone objected to her sister Chloe marrying Marcus, Jessica had stood up and projected damning evidence of Marcus's infidelity onto the church screens. The ceremony was canceled, the groom was exposed as a gold-digging fraud, and Jessica’s family was in absolute disarray.

Clutched in her hand was Chloe's abandoned bridal bouquet—a lush bundle of white orchids. As Jessica stepped into the warm, golden light of the setting sun, she took her first deep breath in hours. The crisp autumn air felt clean compared to the suffocating lies inside. She needed a moment of levity, a release from the crushing tension that had built up over the last several hours. That was when she saw him standing at the edge of the path.

Ryan, the wedding coordinator, was adjusting his dark suit and checking his VIP lanyard, his face etched with stress. To the rest of the world, he was just the coordinator. To Jessica, he was the ghost of her past. They had been high school sweethearts, planning a future together until he abruptly vanished from her life five years ago. Seeing him coordinate this disaster of a wedding had been an emotional torture she hadn't prepared for.

Impulsively, Jessica locked eyes with him. With a sudden, playful swing of her arm, she threw the heavy white orchid bouquet straight at him. Ryan, completely caught off guard, jerked backward in comical shock. His eyes widened, his mouth opened in a perfect 'O' of surprise, and his hands flew up to catch the flying flowers. Jessica couldn't help herself. The absurdity of the day broke her, and she stepped closer, laughing out loud at his hilarious reaction. On the church steps, the bridesmaids and groomsmen watched them, their whispers cutting through the sunset air.
