A Crash in the Mist

The autumn fog rolled thick and heavy over the winding mountain pass, swallowing the headlights of Dylan’s beat-up pickup truck. It was past midnight, and the nineteen-year-old mechanic was exhausted after a grueling double shift at the local garage. He just wanted to get home, crawl into bed, and forget the persistent ache of loneliness that had followed him since his mother’s passing. But the road had other plans.

Suddenly, a sharp screech of rubber tore through the quiet night, followed by the sickening crunch of metal colliding with asphalt. Dylan slammed on his brakes, his heart leaping into his throat. Through the swirling grey mist, a single cracked headlight flickered on the roadside embankment. A motorcycle lay on its side, its rear wheel still spinning lazily in the damp air.

Dylan scrambled out of his truck, grabbing a clean white shop rag from his glovebox. "Hello? Is anyone there?" he called out, his voice swallowed by the dense fog. Sliding down the wet grassy slope, he found a man lying motionless beside the wrecked bike. The rider was older, around forty-six, wearing a worn-out brown leather riding vest adorned with skull patches.

Dylan crouched in the damp grass, his hands trembling as he assessed the situation. The man was conscious but groaning in agony, clutching a severely lacerated shoulder.

"Hey. Are you hurt bad?"
Dylan asked, his voice laced with panic. The older man looked up, his eyes glassy with pain but strangely calm. Without waiting for an answer, Dylan pressed the white cloth firmly against the wound, attempting to stem the dark blood soaking through the man's shirt.

The man winced, breathing heavily as he stared at Dylan’s face. Despite the cold and the pain, a warm, knowing expression flickered in his eyes.

"You didn't have to do this,"
the man whispered, his voice a raspy rumble.
"You're stronger than you think, kid."
