Previously: When 19-year-old Dylan stops to help a crashed motorcyclist on a foggy night, a silver compass necklace sparks a shocking revelation that rewrites his entire childhood.

The Ghost of the Past

Dylan frowned, puzzled by the stranger's familiarity. But as he leaned forward to apply more pressure to the wound, his black hoodie fell open, and the silver compass necklace he always wore slipped out, dangling under the headlights. The injured man’s breath hitched. He stared at the silver trinket, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief.

"Sarah..."
the man whispered, a tear cutting through the grime on his face.

Dylan froze, his blood turning to ice. Sarah was his late mother's name. How could this transient biker know her? Dylan's eyes darted to the man's exposed forearm, where the sleeve had been torn away. There, etched in faded black ink, was a tattoo of the exact same compass design. The realization hit Dylan like a physical blow. This rugged, injured biker was Colt—the father who had walked out on him and his mother nineteen years ago.

Anger, hot and suffocating, flared up inside Dylan. He wanted to yank his hands away and leave the man to bleed in the dirt.

"You,"
Dylan spat, his voice trembling with years of pent-up resentment.
"You're the coward who left us. You let my mother work herself to death while you rode around playing outlaw!"

Colt winced, shaking his head weakly.

"Dylan, please... it’s not what you think,"
he gasped, reaching out with a blood-stained hand.
"I never wanted to leave. Your grandfather, Harold, gave me no choice. He threatened to use his power to put me away and take you to foster care where Sarah would never see you. I had to play the villain so she could keep you safe."
