The Reunion in the Yard

The damp concrete of the detention facility's training yard felt colder than usual under Sarah's worn canvas shoes. Dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit, she felt stripped of her dignity, but her spirit remained unbroken. For months, she had been locked away for a crime she didn't commit, framed by the very men she once called brothers in arms. But today was different. Today, she could hear the familiar, frantic panting and the sharp click of claws on concrete before she even saw them.

Lieutenant Robert and Officer Miller marched into the yard, holding the heavy leather leashes of four massive German Shepherds. Shadow, Buster, Jax, and Bella—the elite K9 pack Sarah had raised and trained from birth. The dogs were visibly agitated, their eyes wild and mouths foaming as they snarled at the guards. Robert, struggling with the tension of the leashes, had a malicious grin on his face. He wanted to intimidate her. He wanted to show her that her beloved pack now belonged to him.

"Pull them back, now!" Robert yelled, pretending to lose control as the dogs lunged toward Sarah, their fierce barks echoing off the concrete walls. The surrounding guards stepped back in panic. But Sarah didn't flinch. She stood her ground, her auburn hair whipping in the overcast wind.

As the dogs reached her, the violent snarling abruptly stopped. The transition was instantaneous. Shadow whimpered softly, pressing his massive snout into her palm. Buster and Jax flanked her sides, acting as living shields, while Bella turned around, baring her teeth protectively at Robert. The entire yard fell dead silent.

"They're... they're guarding her?" Robert stammered, his face turning a ghostly pale as he pointed a trembling finger.

Sarah slowly raised her hand, fingers curling into a subtle, silent command gesture. Instantly, all four dogs sat in perfect unison, their eyes locked onto Robert. Officer Miller watched in utter disbelief. "How did she do that?" he whispered.

Sarah walked past Robert, the dogs moving with me like a royal guard. She stopped, leaning in close.

"They were never yours to control,"
she said coldly.
