The Ghost of the Desert

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty desert firing range, baking the cracked earth and creating a shimmering haze over the targets. Arthur walked slowly toward the check-in counter, his boots kicking up small clouds of dust. At sixty-six, his hair was thinning and grey, and his rugged face bore the deep lines of a life lived under harsh conditions. He wore a faded beige canvas jacket, looking more like a wandering tourist than a seasoned veteran.

Standing near the counter was Leo, a thirty-four-year-old active-duty soldier dressed in immaculate, high-tech black tactical gear. Leo looked at Arthur with a smug, mocking smile. To Leo and his young companions, this old man was a relic of a bygone era, someone who had no business being at a high-caliber range.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

Leo sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. His buddies chuckled behind him, folding their arms. Arthur didn't flinch. He remained silent, his steady gaze locked onto the young soldier. As Arthur reached down to open his weathered rifle case, his sleeve pulled back slightly, revealing a faded black tattoo on his forearm—a snarling wolf surrounded by a crown of thorns.

Leo glanced at the tattoo and laughed dismissively. "Nice ink, old man. Did you get that at a gift shop?" he mocked. Arthur didn't answer. He calmly lifted his scoped bolt-action rifle, stepped up to the firing lane, and aimed at a target five hundred yards away in the howling crosswind. He took a single, calm breath.

"I only need one shot,"

Arthur said softly. A second later, the rifle cracked. Through the spotting scope, Leo’s eyes widened in absolute shock. The bullet had struck the exact center of the bullseye. Leo's face went pale, a single tear of disbelief rolling down his cheek under his military cap. An older officer nearby whispered in awe, "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
