Previously: When a smug young soldier mocks a rugged 66-year-old veteran at a desert firing range, he has no idea he is challenging a legendary member of the military's most elite ghost unit.

The Canyon of Shadows

The sudden silence at the firing range was broken by the heavy footsteps of Colonel Vance, the base commander, who walked out of the briefing room with a grim expression. He held a red folder tightly in his hand, his eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on Arthur. Ignoring the stunned active-duty soldiers, the Colonel marched straight to the veteran.

"Arthur, thank God you're still here. We have an emergency,"

the Colonel said, his voice tense. "A scouting patrol went missing in the Devil's Canyon three hours ago. A flash flood is coming, and our GPS systems can't penetrate the deep rock formations. You are the only living soul who knows those old survival trails."

Leo, still shaking from the display of marksmanship, stepped forward, his arrogance completely gone. "Sir, my younger brother, Toby, is leading that patrol," he stammered, his voice cracking. He looked at Arthur, his eyes filled with desperate tears. The very man he had mocked minutes ago was now his brother's only hope of survival.

Arthur stared at the map. The Devil's Canyon was where he had lost his own spotter thirty years ago during a tragic training exercise. He had sworn never to step foot in those treacherous ravines again. The memories of that day still haunted his dreams, a phantom pain far worse than any physical wound.

"Please, Arthur,"

Leo begged, dropping to his knees on the dusty ground. "I was a fool. I'll do anything. Just save my brother." Arthur looked down at the broken young soldier. He knew that pride was a deadly weight in the wild, but he also knew the pain of losing a brother in arms. Arthur sighed, his decision made. "Get your gear, Leo. You're coming with me. And you're going to learn what real duty means," Arthur commanded.
